The aesthetics and function of a product is
the main driver behind the appeal of any kind of product to a consumer. If it
looks nice and makes u want to use it due to its aesthetic appeal then the
producer is doing something right. Along with this aesthetic appeal is the
function of it and if it is easy to use and work with too. My standpoint on
industrial design after group discussions also is that over time many products
have come and gone but the good ones that have stayed have changed dramatically
in form, function and aesthetics. So I am looking at the way in which these
products have evolved and changed and in particular the Apple Macintosh
computers. The way products are constantly changing and bringing out better and
better models of itself is very rapid and I chose Apple in particular because
of the numerous changes, small and major that have contributed to the ideal
Imac we see on our shelves today.
"We wanted to get rid of
anything other than what was absolutely essential, but you don't see that effort.
We kept going back to the beginning again and again. Do we need that part? Can
we get it to perform the function of the other four parts?” (Ives. n.d) A quote from Jonathan Ive, who is the senior industrial designer at
Apple Inc just defines and shows further that the change from the massive box
type computers we used to use to the now very slim screens with built in hard
drives is a way of refining a product to be as functional easy to use for the
user as well as having the aesthetic appeal still.
