DSDN 104 - Final Laser Cut Model

Some shots of my final model:

Final:
This is my final laser cut model. I tried to show the same shadows and effect that the layers have through the photography of this and the way all the layers come together to show a distorted effect. I considered painting the acrylic but went against it because i wanted emphasis on the jagged edges and how u can see them if you look through my model because it being clear has a nice effect with layering.

DSDN 104 - Revised Render

This is my revised render of my original model. I looked at this from a more upward view to make it look a bit shorter because my laser cut model didn't justify the length of my original. i wanted to add some light on one side to show the layers in the centre and the different twists that occur and the feeling of distortion as you look at the centre layers of the model.

DSDN 104 - Return Of Laser Cut Files

A rough look at how many pieces i will be using to create my model.

DSDN 104 - Sketch Models

Slot Model Trial:

This is was a rough model to experiment with the idea of a spine and having parts coming off just to see if the idea would actually work off paper.

This is the top view of the same one just showing how the pieces are branching off the centre spine type support.

Slot Connection Trial:

This was a model trying to see how i would connect the pieces from the previous model to the spine. Having small slots and fitting them in i think would work best if i was to do this way.

Layering Trial:

This was my first attempt at the layering effect and only tried a few layers at first just to get the effect of what the overall one could look like bering in mind the acrylic is a lot thicker than the paper i'm using here.

Another Layering Trial:

Here i tried making some of the top layers to see what the top would look like and also tried bending some of the sides if i were to use card to bend up the edges.

Final Paper Trial:

I ended up choosing the layering method to go ahead with. This model is a top view of the layers and the effect i created around the edges too with the different points and shapes.

The bottom view of the final model before i submit my file for laser cutting. I really like the layers and twisted effect that has been made especially from the bottom view here.

Final Cardboard Model:

The final laser cut cardboard model to show how it turned out. My final is going to be made out of all acrylic so it will be taller but i like how it has come along and the detail in the edges.

Another angle of the card model. The twisted edges worked out the way i wanted and the layered effect i believe was the better way to go in the end after seeing this produced.

DSDN 104 - More Sketches

Connection Possibilities:

This is my intended connection method if i go ahead with the layered way of doing it. I plan to have holes in every piece of the acrylic and have nylon or something similar to bind it all together.

This is my other idea of construction if i choose the slot method. I imagine having a spine type piece to slot all the pieces into and work around that as the core of my model.

DSDN 104 - Sketches/ Ideas

Rough Views of my Model:

These are 2 rough sketches of my model from the top and side view to get the basic shape and idea of how im going to construct my model.

Possible Construction Ideas:

These are my main 2 potential construction ideas. The first is getting a lot of layers and putting thread through them all to bind them or the other being a central spine of the model and have bits to slot onto it off that.

Potential Size:

This is just me getting a rough idea of how tall my model could/ would be if i used approx 30 layers of the acrylic.

DSDN 104 - Precedents/ Inspiration

This one i found interesting as it looks at the stacking method but with sum edges being pulled out or twisted like the effect i want to try and get.

I just found the concept of this really cool and the amount of layers that have gone in to create such a detailed skull. Again looking at the layering up effect.

This one i found interesting and kept it because i found the joints and the way its connected to be very subtle to keep the curves and aesthetic look to it. An idea for joints if i decide to take that route.
